Nassella tenuissima, commonly known as Mexican feather grass or fine-leaved sheepgrass, is a graceful and delicate ornamental grass cherished for its fine-textured, ethereal appearance. This perennial grass typically forms dense clumps of slender, arching blades that can reach heights of 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60 centimeters). Its leaves are emerald green and exceptionally narrow, giving the plant a feathery and airy quality. During the summer, Nassella tenuissima produces feathery panicles of silky, golden-green flower heads that dance gracefully in the breeze, adding a captivating and kinetic element to the landscape. As the seasons progress, the grass changes hues, taking on warm, golden tones in the fall, creating a stunning visual display. This ornamental grass is highly prized for its ability to bring a sense of movement and elegance to gardens and landscaping, whether used as a focal point, in borders, or as a ground cover. Its adaptability to a variety of soil types and drought tolerance make it a popular choice among gardeners seeking to add a touch of nature's poetry to their outdoor spaces.  Zones 7-11

Germination

To germinate Nassella tenuissima seeds, Scarify the seeds lightly by gently rubbing them between sandpaper or nicking them with a small file. This helps break the seed coat and allows moisture to penetrate more easily. You can also soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours to further aid in softening the seed coat. After scarification or soaking, plant the seeds in a well-draining potting mix or directly in your garden bed. Sow them at a depth of about 1/8 inch (3 mm) and press them lightly into the soil to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and provide a warm environment with temperatures around 70-75°F (21-24°C) for germination. Germination may take anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks. Once the seedlings have developed several leaves and are large enough to handle, they can be transplanted to their permanent location in your garden or landscape.
