Miscanthus sinensis 'Zebrinus,' commonly known as Zebra grass, is an eye-catching ornamental grass celebrated for its striking variegated foliage and graceful form. This perennial grass, a cultivar of the larger Miscanthus sinensis species, typically reaches heights of 4 to 7 feet (1.2 to 2.1 meters). What sets 'Zebrinus' apart is its unique, horizontally banded leaves with alternating stripes of green and creamy gold, resembling the stripes of a zebra. In late summer to early fall, it produces feathery plumes of flowers that emerge with a pinkish tint before turning silvery-white, creating a captivating contrast with the foliage. Zebra grass is known for its resilience, drought tolerance, and adaptability to a variety of soil types, making it a favored choice in landscaping. It lends a dramatic and elegant touch to gardens, whether planted as a specimen, in borders, or alongside water features, offering year-round visual interest and a touch of the exotic to outdoor spaces.  Zones 5-9

Germination

Miscanthus sinensis 'Zebrinus' Sow the seeds in a seed tray or pots filled with a well-draining potting mix. Lightly press the seeds into the surface of the soil, but do not bury them, as they require light for germination. Maintain a consistently moist environment and provide bottom heat, ideally around 70-75°F (21-24°C), to enhance germination rates. Germination may take several weeks to a few months. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, they can be transplanted into individual pots or directly into your garden when they are well-established. Keep in mind that the resulting plants may not display the characteristic variegated foliage of 'Zebrinus,' as it is often more reliably propagated through division.
