Bouteloua curtipendula, commonly known as Sideoats Grama or Side-Oats Grama, is a native grass species of North America. This warm-season perennial grass is known for its distinctive seed heads that hang gracefully along one side of its stems, resembling decorative earrings. The seeds, changing color from green to purplish-brown, provide visual interest and food for wildlife. Germination
To germinate Bouteloua curtipendula seeds, start by preparing a seed starting tray or small pots with a well-draining seed starting mix, such as a blend of sand and peat moss. Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil and lightly press them into the mix. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged by misting regularly or using a gentle watering can. Bouteloua curtipendula seeds require warmth for germination, so place the tray or pots in a warm location with indirect sunlight, maintaining a temperature between 70-80°F (21-27°C). Germination typically occurs within 7-21 days. Once the seedlings emerge, provide them with ample light and gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions if transplanting.
