Ficus auriculata, also known as the Roxburgh fig or elephant ear fig, is a medium to large-sized evergreen tree. It can reach heights of up to 20-30 meters (65-100 feet) or more, depending on the growing conditions. The tree is characterized by its distinctive leaves with ear-like lobes, giving it a unique appearance. The glossy, vibrant green leaves can grow up to 10-20 centimeters (4-8 inches) in length. It produces small, inconspicuous flowers that develop into small, fig-like fruits. Ficus auriculata thrives in tropical and subtropical climates and is often found in rainforests and mixed woodlands. Its adaptable nature and ornamental foliage make it a desirable choice for landscaping in suitable regions. Zones 9-11

Germination

To germinate Ficus auriculata seeds clean the seeds thoroughly to remove any fruit residue. Gently scarify the tough seed coat with sandpaper or a small knife to facilitate water absorption. Soak the scarified seeds in warm water for around 24 hours to further soften the coat. Plant the seeds about 1 cm deep in a well-draining potting mix in trays or small pots. Keep the soil consistently moist and place the containers in a warm, well-lit area, maintaining temperatures of approximately 70-80°F (21-27°C). Germination can take weeks to months. Once seedlings emerge, provide indirect light and gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions. Transplant the seedlings into individual pots when they develop true leaves and eventually move them to a suitable outdoor location with well-draining soil and proper sunlight. Patience and attentive care during each step will contribute to successful Ficus auriculata seed germination and healthy seedling growth.
