Caesalpinia gilliesii, known as the Desert Bird of Paradise, is an exotic beauty originating from South America. Its fern-like foliage creates an intriguing texture. During warm months, the plant bursts into a profusion of vibrant yellow flowers that resemble the plumage of tropical birds. These flowers are further adorned with striking red stamens. The shrub's height of 2-3 meters and its spreading nature make it a charming addition to landscapes. Drought tolerance suits arid climates while well-draining soil and sunlight are its allies. Caesalpinia gilliesii thrives as a focal point or border plant, capturing the essence of a tropical paradise in gardens and outdoor spaces.  Zones 8-11

Germination

To germinate Caesalpinia gilliesii seeds, start by scarifying the hard seed coat to enhance water absorption and improve germination. You can do this by gently rubbing the seeds with sandpaper or nicking them with a knife. After scarification, soak the seeds in room temperature water for 24 hours to further soften the seed coat. Next, prepare a seed tray or small pots with a well-draining seed starting mix, such as a combination of peat moss and perlite. Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil and lightly press them into the mix. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged by misting regularly or using a gentle watering can. Place the tray or pots in a warm location with indirect sunlight, maintaining a temperature between 70-80°F (21-27°C). Germination typically occurs within 2-8 weeks. Once the seedlings emerge, provide them with ample light and gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions if transplanting. Caesalpinia gilliesii prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Continue to care for the seedlings with proper watering and light as they grow into mature plants.
