Lobelia inflata, commonly known as Indian Tobacco or Puke Weed, is a small, annual herbaceous plant native to North America, particularly in the eastern United States and Canada. It typically grows to a height of 1 to 3 feet (30 to 90 cm) and features narrow, lance-shaped leaves and small, tubular flowers that are pale blue to lavender in color, with a distinctive white lower lip. Lobelia inflata is characterized by its inflated seed pods, which are the source of its common name.  Annual

Germination

Germinating Lobelia inflata seeds can be a bit challenging due to their specific requirements. To enhance germination, stratify the seeds by placing them in a plastic bag with a damp paper towel or peat moss and refrigerate them for 2-4 weeks to mimic winter conditions. After stratification, sow the seeds in a seed tray or small pots filled with a well-draining seed-starting mix. Lightly press the seeds onto the surface of the soil; they require light for germination, so do not bury them. Maintain a temperature of around 65-70°F (18-21°C) and provide indirect light or grow lights. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, using a fine mist to water the seeds to avoid dislodging them. Germination can be slow, taking several weeks to a few months. Once the seedlings have developed several true leaves, transplant them into individual pots or into the garden, ensuring they receive well-drained soil and partial shade. Lobelia inflata is a delicate plant, so handle the seedlings with care, and be patient, as successful germination may take time and attention.
