Sphaeralcea ambigua, commonly known as apricot mallow or desert globemallow, is a resilient and eye-catching perennial plant native to the arid regions of North America. This low-growing shrub typically reaches heights of 1 to 3 feet and is characterized by its silvery-gray, fuzzy leaves and a profusion of showy, funnel-shaped flowers. The flowers come in various shades, but the most common is a striking apricot or orange, adding a vibrant splash of color to the desert landscape. Sphaeralcea ambigua is well adapted to arid environments, thriving in sandy, well-draining soils, and it can endure drought conditions. Its deep taproot allows it to access water in the dry desert soils. This plant is highly valued for its resilience and is often used in xeriscaping and native plant landscaping to create a burst of color in dry, challenging environments while providing essential nectar sources for pollinators like bees and butterflies.  Zones 8-11

Germination

To germinate Sphaeralcea ambigua seeds, start by scarifying the seeds lightly using sandpaper to break the seed coat and improve germination rates. Once scarified, plant the seeds in a well-draining seed-starting mix, covering them with a thin layer of soil. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. These seeds typically benefit from a period of cold stratification to mimic natural conditions, which can be achieved by placing them in a sealed plastic bag with damp vermiculite or sand and refrigerating them for 2-4 weeks. After this cold treatment, move the seeds to a warmer location with temperatures around 20-25°C (68-77°F). Germination usually occurs within 2-4 weeks. Once the seedlings are robust enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots or directly into the garden, providing ample sunlight and well-drained soil. This process imitates the conditions Sphaeralcea ambigua seeds would experience in their natural desert habitat, leading to successful germination and growth.
