Securigera varia, commonly known as crownvetch, is a vigorous and perennial herbaceous plant native to parts of Europe, Asia, and North Africa. It is highly valued for its erosion control and ground cover abilities and has been introduced to various regions for soil stabilization purposes. Crownvetch forms dense mats of pinnate, green foliage and produces clusters of pretty, pink to purplish-pink pea-like flowers during the summer months. Its extensive root system helps prevent soil erosion, making it a preferred choice for roadside and embankment planting. Though its aggressive growth can sometimes make it challenging to control in certain environments, it remains a valuable asset in erosion-prone areas and continues to serve its purpose in soil conservation and landscaping projects.  Zones 3-10.

Germination

Germinating Securigera varia seeds can be accomplished through several steps. These seeds have hard coats, so scarification, which involves nicking or scratching the seed coat, is recommended to improve germination. You can scarify the seeds with sandpaper or by carefully making a small nick in the seed coat with a knife. After scarification, soak the seeds in warm water for 24 hours. Once prepared, sow the seeds directly in well-draining soil or a seed-starting mix, then lightly cover them with soil. Keep the soil consistently moist and place the container in a warm and sunny location with a temperature of around 70-75°F (21-24°C) for germination. Crownvetch seeds typically germinate within a few weeks to a few months. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, they can be transplanted to your desired location, where they will establish themselves as effective ground cover and erosion control plants.
