Astragalus sinicus, or Chinese milkvetch, is a delicate perennial reaching 30-60 cm in height. Its pinnately compound leaves bear lance-shaped leaflets. Clusters of pale purple flowers, reminiscent of peas, bloom atop long stalks. Astragalus sinicus thrives in a variety of habitats, including grasslands, open woodlands, and mountain slopes. This plant thrives in well-drained soils across diverse habitats. It also enriches soil through nitrogen fixation. Cultivated for ornamental charm and traditional healing properties. Zones 5-11

Gemination

To germinate Astragalus sinicus seeds, start by scarifying the hard seed coat using sandpaper or a sharp knife to improve water absorption. After scarification, soak the seeds in room temperature water for 24 hours to further soften the coat. Next, prepare a seed starting tray or small pots with well-draining soil, such as a mix of peat moss and perlite. Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil and lightly press them into the mix. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged by misting regularly or using a gentle watering can. Place the tray or pots in a warm location with indirect sunlight, maintaining a temperature between 70-80°F (21-27°C). Germination typically occurs within 2-4 weeks. Once the seedlings emerge, provide adequate spacing if growing in trays or transplant them into individual pots when they have developed a few sets of true leaves. Astragalus sinicus prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Continue to care for the seedlings with proper watering and light as they grow into mature plants.
